Here is a description of the project on Heatherwick's website:

Heatherwick Studio was commissioned to design a café building to replace the beach pavilion in Littlehampton, a traditional seaside town on the south coast of England. Situated between the sea and a row of houses, the narrow site is subject to weathering and vandalism. The studio's challenge was to create a tall, slender building without a flat, two-dimensional facade.

The building was cut diagonally into strips that wrap diagonally around the building, creating a layered protective shell that opens out to the sea beyond. The openings are filled with glass doors and windows, protected at night by shutters hidden within the geometry of the building, the width of the strip being the size of a 30 cm shutter mechanism.

In contrast to the traditional white seaside aesthetic, the building is raw and weathered, with its structural steel shell coated with an oil-based coating that allows a rust-like patina to form without affecting structural performance.

The new café features a buffet and cafeteria during the day and a 60-seat restaurant in the evening.
