Here is the press release from Chipperfield's office:

David Chipperfield presented the latest designs for Turner Contemporary's new showroom at The Theatre Royal, Margate on Tuesday October 16, 2007.

Since the designs were last shown in June, David Chipperfield Architects have worked closely with Kent County Council and the wider client group, as well as taking into account public comments. The design of the building has evolved significantly and now includes six interlocking rectangular forms.

Mounted on a plinth and on two floors instead of three, the building retains a strong sculptural character in the space. The roofline has been altered to more closely reflect other architecture in Margate and to allow northern light to enter the gallery spaces on the entire first floor. The choice of opaque glass as a cladding material was also influenced by the nature of the building, its location and lighting.

Visitors will experience an element of surprise and drama as they move through the building. From the café on the ground floor there will be panoramic sea views as well as the chance to see the town and the bay. A spectacular double-height space in the ground floor gallery will be used to display new works. The large, multifunctional space on the ground floor and the outside terrace will allow for a variety of events and activities as part of the gallery program.

The first floor will include all gallery spaces, including a youth gallery and studio space for use by groups, including schools. This floor will also feature a balcony leading from the ground floor gallery, offering spectacular sea views.

The space behind the house includes offices, warehouses and workshops organized on both floors. These spaces will not be accessible to the public but are vital to the smooth functioning of the gallery.

Speaking about the final design, David Chipperfield said: "We developed the design following a public meeting in June to make the most of the dramatic setting with extraordinary views. Our building will face the sea, connect to the city and capture the unique light that inspired Turner."
